Charlie Maslin – stocking rate calculation – am I carrying too many at present? (making those difficult decisions easier)
Monaro farmer Charlie Maslin is visiting Orbost on the 19th of November. For 2 hours he will chat about grazing management charts and how they can help in the decision to destock, hold onto the cattle, etc.
Charlie will use local figures provided by Orbost farmers to show how his stocking rate calculation helps in the decision making process.
‘We look at time of year…. the seasonal outlook ….the composition of our mobs…and our gut feel…..because when you get back to paddock number one….and there is not much feed there…it really makes you think!
BUT to actually make us press the button….. we also use a simple stock carried…. and rainfall received, calculation.
Set this up on a spreadsheet, each month all you need to do is add in the stock numbers you have changed, add in the last months rain, and calculate your current DDH figure. If you have not changed your stock
numbers, just insert the last months rain…30secs to complete!’
Charlie has visited East Gippsland before and his ability to translate what you hear at information sessions into actual practical on farm solutions is a highly valued skill. On the day he will also demonstrate a couple of easy methods to measure ground cover, soil water retention and more.
All are welcome.
